Hiking & Camping Road Trip – April 2019

Last week Steve and I went camping at Raccoon Creek State Park for a few nights.  We were able to visit 10 more state parks.  We did a lot of hiking, exploring, and I’m so happy to say that we have visited all 121 of Pennsylvania’s State Parks! 🙂  We have been working on visiting them all since 2007.  Here are our pictures from last week.

Day one:

We ate lunch here and enjoyed a nice view of the lake and sky.  Then we hiked a few miles.

Next was Yellow Creek where we hiked and saw a lot of skunk cabbage & daffodils.  It’s so interesting that skunk cabbage produces it’s own heat up to 70 degrees. That’s why it’s able to grow when it’s still in The 40’s here in PA.

We really lucked out because the weather was awesome for the entire trip. ❤

We hiked at Keystone as well.  It felt good to stretch our legs after the long car ride.

The next two parks were Allegheny Islands and Point.  Allegheny is only accessible by boat.  We knew that but wanted to drive there anyway just to see it.  Then we headed to Pittsburgh where Point State Park is located.  The fountain wasn’t on yet, but we had a blast exploring the park and seeing Pittsburgh for the first time.  The incline cable cars were really cool to see.

We stayed in a cabin at Raccoon Creek.  It was so much fun having a kitchen and bathroom in the cabin.  Each night we cooked dinner and watched movies on our handy portable dvd/tv player.

Day 2:

Raccoon Creek has a wildflower reserve so we went there first thing the next day.  We saw a lot of small flowers called Spring Beauty.  It was a few weeks early for many of the wildflowers we already saw at Shenks Ferry.

The next park was Hillman where we ate lunch and hiked on the Haul trail.

McConnells Mill was really beautiful.  We hiked two trails here.  One to see the covered bridge and mill then to see the waterfalls.

We visited Moraine next but didn’t take any other pictures here.  We saw a beaver dam from far away and enjoyed a nice walk.

Jennings was the very last park to visit and we did a happy dance when we got there! 🙂  We walked along the prairie trail and saw some deer along the way.  It was starting to get dark out so we headed back to the cabin.

Day 3:

We did some more hiking at Raccoon Creek before heading home.  We saw a bunch of beaver dams up close and a waterfall.

It was time to head home and we always see the most beautiful views while driving here in Pennsylvania.

We had so much fun going on so many adventures and hiking hundreds of miles over the years.  I hope to inspire others to enjoy nature and the journey of curiosity & discovery.  Thanks for being a part of the adventure! 🙂 ❤
