Mourning Cloak Butterfly

I woke early to be ready for our hike today and thought about mourning cloak butterflies. I looked it up and saw that they are the first butterflies to emerge from hibernation on warm days in late winter, early spring. While we were hiking, we came to an area where we have seen mourning cloaks before, and as we were talking about it, one appeared. I was so excited and hopeful to capture a photo of it. It flew overhead then landed in the leaves near us. I took a quick photo before it flew away. The picture turned out blurry, so I decided to walk back down that section of the trail while hubby sat down and waited for me. Sure enough, I saw it again, and it did the same thing as before and took a better photo. Then I walked over to hubby to tell him I saw it again and decided to go back a second time. I was standing where I saw it land before and didn’t see it. I looked down to make sure my camera was ready, and there was the mourning cloak on the ground in front of me. I smiled and laughed and was so happy to capture the best photo; what a fantastic time enjoying what I love most.

Definitely a “would live there if we could” kind of place.
